Dicastery for Evangelization

Delegate for Catechesis in the Dicastery for Evangelization

The Church Fathers in particular understood catechesis to be closely linked to the liturgy. Cardinal Walter Kasper described liturgy as sung dogmatics, reflecting that what we pray always shows what we believe. Especially regarding catechesis, we can see that not only the what but also the how is of great importance.

In the USA, this awareness of catechesis grew earlier than in other local churches internationally. The intertwining of phases in learning the faith and confirming and strengthening rites of passage enables a much deeper awareness of faith.

May the catechesis of the Church thus become a real 'κατ᾽ ἐξοχήν' and bring about the echo of faith in the lives of the learners.

The first section of the Dicastery for Evangelization is endeavoring, beyond the Holy Year 2025, to support initiatives such as those in the USA which are exemplary for the universal Church. With this in mind, this book by Deirdre Nemeth demonstrates and communicates the connection between liturgy and catechesis in a practical way.

Deirdre Nemeth's approach outlined in this book is one of the most successful new approaches of our times. The home is undoubtedly a privileged place of catechesis. Her approach of family faith formation not only recognizes this reality but helps the parents both grow in their own faith and in their responsibility of bringing up the children in the Catholic faith. Anyone who adopts this method of catechesis cannot help but see positive results.

By placing the Eucharist at the heart of faith formation, this program embodies the sacramental core of catechesis, fostering a deep and transformative encounter with Christ. Its family-centered approach further empowers parents to embrace their sacred role as the primary catechists of their children. The effectiveness of this model is evident in the revitalization of parishes that have adopted it, with increased engagement, discipleship, and community flourishing. I strongly encourage all catechetical leaders to implement this program.

The I Am the Way, the Truth, and the Life Mass-Centered Family Faith Formation program is a welcome contribution to the parish efforts to orient families to living and learning about the Catholic faith with the Mass and the Eucharist as the focal point.

Where It All Began

The Catechism of the Catholic Church clearly states that parents have responsibility for the education of their children. Deirdre Nemeth is a parent, teacher, and witness. Drawing from her years of experience and watching the decline in the practice of faith as secular pursuits take center stage, she has compiled a program of family faith formation.

In this program parents, who often feel inadequate in teaching the faith, and parish directors of faith formation programs are drawn together to create something beautiful. Children and parents, side-by-side, learning and growing in faith is a beautiful gift for all involved.

This is a gift beyond measure in our ever-changing culture where the faithful person meets challenge after challenge.

Those who use this program of family faith formation will advance the faith of adults and children preparing them to both teach and witness to Jesus Christ in the living of their lives.

This program has made a huge impact. Families are more enthusiastic about coming to Mass together and sharing their faith at home. They also are building relationships with our priests and each other.

Rev. Jared J. Brogan, S.T.L., Pastor
The implementation of this catechetical format has made a great difference in the lives of our families and parish family as a whole. The whole family provides an opportunity for us to be faithful to our universal call to holiness and discipleship, centered around the Eucharist.
St. Kateri Parish
Sparta, NJ
Cheryl Wallace, Director of Faith Formation
As a DRE, I can really see that this model is helping parents and families to practice prioritizing the Lord's Day in their weekly schedule throughout the year, and that it is bringing parents and families to Jesus in the sacraments on a regular basis.

Father Martin Glynn, Pastor
Since we began the Mass-centered religious program last year, we have seen a 60 percent increase in Mass attendance among the parents of our religious education children. The Celebration of Mass has to be the very center of any religious program.

PJ Miller, Director of Religious Education
Once we were up and running, comments from parents included: "Thank you for making us return to church. I did not realize how much I missed it" and "It is nice to see the church so full."

Rev. Msgr. Geno Sylva, S.T.D.
It continues to be one of, if not the most effective forms of evangelization I have ever witnessed. More than a program, it is an arena in which parents, children, catechists, and priests and deacons come to know one another, realizing the great joy of being members of the Mystical Body of Christ.

What Parents Are Saying

Thank you for making us return to church. I did not realize how much I missed it.

Parent — St. Mary's, Denville, NJ

In over 40 years of a Catholic upbringing including attending CCD for many years, taking part as a sponsor in an RCIA program, and having four children in Catholic School, I have never understood Mass the way I do now.

Parent of 1st through 7th Graders

At first we started attending Mass because it was a requirement of the program for our son to make his First Communion, but then we fell in love with the Mass. We believe the graces we received from going to Mass transformed our family life for the better. Now we go to Mass every Sunday.

Parent — Diocese of Paterson

I love this program! You are getting all of us to come to Mass!
